It is the end of the year and the many things that 2019 will be remembered for includes the level of shame some personalities invited on themselves through their utterances and actions.
Two personalities whose moment of shame in 2019 will stand tall amongst all in the eyes of Ghanaians are the Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency, Kofi Kapito; Communications Director of the United Kingdom Branch of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Ansah Obofuor.
For these two, even though their positions in society required them to act with outmost decorum, they at a point in the year let their morals fall too low in the eyes of Ghanaians.
Mr Kapito was bashed by Ghanaians for making a comment which many felt was far too low for a man of his caliber. What made things worse for him was the fact that his comment bordered around sexual harassment which had become a topic for discussion at the time.
At the 2019 Radio and Television Personality Awards, held at the Accra International Conference Centre, Kapito who was called to present an award upon mounting the stage, spotted Serwaa Amihere of GhOne in one of the front rows and looked in her direction saying “Ey, Serwaa Amihere. Look at your butts. Nice!”
Hours after the show, Serwaa Aminhere took to her Twitter handle to accuse Kapito of sexual harassment.
Serwaa Amihere posted on her Twitter saying "I had so much respect for Mr. Kofi Kapito. This is a classic case of sexual harassment. I’m appalled by his utterances. This was needless and completely disrespectful!"
Discussions that followed the incident at the ICC and a subsequent post by the female journalist indicated the general disappointment of Ghanaians in the CPA boss.I had so much respect for Mr. Kofi Kapito. Reacting to Nana Aba’s criticism, Nana Ansah Obofuor descended on the journalist by posting on his Twitter page saying, “See dis useless and hopeless Mahama photoshop girl too, she will not find a responsible man and marry to be a useful wife, but move around sleeping with her colleague women’s husbands for money, allow your son go see his father so he won’t be a bastard.”
The very unpleasant words used by the party executive on the female journalist was met with equal condemnation from Ghanaians, especially on social media and traditional media.
The shaming that followed his post on Twitter compelled the Communications Director to issue an apology to the journalist, through which he also dissociated his party from the comments he made.
