GhanaWeb Polls: 86% of respondents kick against new voter register

Over 80% of people who have responded to a poll by www.ghanaweb.com on whether the Electoral Commission of Ghana should go ahead with its planned compilation of a new voter register say the commission should not go ahead with its plan.

Asked "Should the EC go ahead with the new register?" a total of 141,132 respondents voted in the poll between May 19 and May 20, 2020.

Out of the number, 19,002 persons representing 13.46% of the total number voted YES, while 121,568 persons representing 86.14% of the total voted NO.

The remaining 562 representing 0.40% of the respondents voted indifferent.

From economic to social factors, some of the respondents cited varied reasons to justify their voting choice in the comment section of the poll.

“There is no need for a new register if the old could be used for the Assembly elections. Moreover, it’s not every Ghanaian that has the Ghana Card. The EC's attempt to use the Ghana Card is a ploy to rig the elections in favour of NPP.” A respondent said.

A respondent also said “Compiling a new register is needless and waste of resources” while another said “the EC and to some extent, NPP has made up their mind to prepare a new register no matter what anyone or civil society groups say about it. I don't see why we have to queue again in this time of COVID-19 to register again.”

GhanaWeb launched its polls in May with the first question being: should the EC go ahead with the new register?

This poll question gained 141,132 responses in 48 hours and over 2,000 people commented under the poll expressing divergent views about the Electoral Commission and the new voters’ register.
