Ghana’s first and most popular news portal, GhanaWeb, has launched an online campaign to educate the public about the novel coronavirus pandemic which has claimed the lives of thousands of people around the world.

Spread the Word, Not the Virus campaign was created by GhanaWeb to sensitize the public about the deadly effect of the COVID-19 disease which can be prevented by following the global safety measures of regularly washing hands and maintaining physical distancing among others.

Creeping into Ghana barely a month ago, dozens of people have contracted the COVID-19 disease while a few others have died; hence the global call for a concerted effort by all institutions to follow the approved safety protocols.

GhanaWeb quickly heeded to the call by playing the major role of informing and educating the public about the disease via the newly created page: www.ghanaweb.com/coronavirus.

“As a leader in the online news space in Ghana, the world looks up to GhanaWeb for all the latest news on the coronavirus pandemic in the country. We quickly rose to the task and put together all the information needed for public consumption,” said Ismail Akwei, the Editor-in-Chief of GhanaWeb.

“GhanaWeb has set up a fact-checking team that fact checks and crosschecks the news stories and updates coming in to maintain the high ethical standards of journalism we adhere to. The Coronavirus Page has been visited by over a 100,000 Ghanaians and we hope it helps in the sensitization process,” Mr. Akwei added.

The page contains detailed categories including the latest news on the disease; the scope of the disease; symptoms; protective measures to take; facts vs fiction; travel advisory; emergency guide; national reactions etc. These details are also being shared on all GhanaWeb social media pages as part of the campaign with the hashtag #SpreadTheWordNotTheVirus.

GhanaWeb has also put in place protective measures for its staff at its satellite location in Ghana where optimum safety precautions are being observed to furnish the over 400,000 daily visitors with the latest news updates on the pandemic.

About GhanaWeb

GhanaWeb is the first vertical portal in Ghana and the first news website for the country relaunched in 1999 to offer news, background information, classifieds, radio stations and a social network for Ghanaians and the Diaspora among others.

The privately-owned independent and objective portal operates under the laws of the Netherlands, a legal setup that has allowed Ghanaians to express themselves freely through opinion articles and comments in over two decades.

Made for and by Ghanaians, GhanaWeb is updated by a team of editors and journalists who write original content and aggregate articles from a wide range of Ghanaian print and online media ensuring a balanced coverage of the news in Ghana.

GhanaWeb has evolved over the years to include video content and social media components to its news feed as well as a mobile app for smooth web navigation. Its team of web developers and web designers regularly improve the technology and design of the portal which has been built to meet the requirements of its 4 million unique visitors each month.

According to the Alexa website traffic statistics, GhanaWeb is very popular among Ghanaian migrants in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Italy, South Africa, Netherlands, France and many other countries.

These loyal visitors and the millions of readers in Ghana have made GhanaWeb the most popular news website in Ghana and ranked the third most visited website in the country after Google and YouTube.

GhanaWeb’s success necessitated the founding of AfricaWeb Holding which has birthed CamerounWeb.com, TanzaniaWeb.com, MyNigeria.com and other country-specific portals to help develop viable independent news portals, web and publishing solutions in Africa.
