The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GhanaWeb, David Antwi, has reflected on the crucial and impactful role the news portal has played in the country’s media landscape.

Speaking at the 2025 edition of the GhanaWeb Excellence Awards at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, on Friday, March 6, 2026, David Antwi explained how the country’s leading digital news portal has earned the trust of Ghanaians for credible news over more than two decades of operation.

According to him, if a story is not on GhanaWeb, it is likely not true.

Reflecting further on GhanaWeb’s role in the country, David Antwi shared an experience involving his mother-in-law, who once came across a false publication on another news platform and had to fact-check it on GhanaWeb.

'I don't think anybody can do what Lumba did within 60 years' - GhanaWeb's CEO

“We’ve come a long way, and as of now, we have about five million unique visitors every month. I really do not think there is any news portal in Ghana that can boast of this number. Why do these five million unique visitors come to GhanaWeb? When something happens, you see our traffic shoot up because everybody knows that if it is on GhanaWeb, it must be true.

“One time, I was with my mother-in-law. Someone on YouTube was claiming that the vice president had passed away, and she was wondering how that could be. So I asked her, ‘Is it on GhanaWeb?’ She said, ‘No.’ Then I told her it was not true. And indeed, it was not on GhanaWeb, and it turned out to be false. So GhanaWeb has become the nation’s number one go-to source for credible, accurate, and trustworthy news,” he said.

David Antwi also disclosed some of GhanaWeb’s plans for the coming weeks.

“We are launching GhanaWeb Memories, a platform where you can store your pictures, such as those taken on the red carpet today. It will also be a place where you can upload photos from your parties, funerals, events, and other special occasions.

“And guess what? We will keep them on GhanaWeb in perpetuity. Once your link is on GhanaWeb, you can share it with your friends, and we will host it permanently. We are also introducing GhanaWeb Real Estate, which should be up by next week,” he added.

Meanwhile, the awards ceremony, organised by GhanaWeb, recognises individuals, institutions, and businesses demonstrating exceptional performance, innovation, and impact in their respective fields.

This year’s event has attracted high-profile guests from government, the private sector, civil society, and the diplomatic community, underscoring the importance of recognising excellence and leadership in national development.

Organisers say the awards aim to spotlight trailblazers whose work is shaping Ghana’s economic and social progress and to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs, professionals, and change-makers.

Throughout the evening, several categories will be presented to honour achievements in areas such as business leadership, innovation, technology, and social impact.
