The Deputy Commissioner of Police responsible for Southern Command Operations, Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, has been appointed the Deputy Chief of Police of the United Nations Missions in Liberia (UNIMIL).
As Deputy Chief of Police, Mr Alhassan will assist the Transitional Government of Liberia in monitoring and restructuring the Police Force of Liberia to be consistent with democratic police principles and to develop civilian police training programme in co-operation with ECOWAS and other international organisations.
Mr Alhassan, 49, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Ghana and Master of Science in Police Administration and Criminology from the University of Wales.
A press release issued by the Public Relations Directorate of the Ghana Police Service in Accra said command positions held by Mr Alhassan include Staff Instructor, Ghana Police College; District Commander of Police, Adabraka; Assistant Staff Officer to the Inspector-General of Police, Divisional Commander of Police, Nkawkaw, Hohoe and Regional Police Commander, Tema.
On the international scene, the release said, Mr Alhassan had served as the District Commander in charge of United Nations Civilian Police in Otwiwarango in Namibia from August 1989 to September 1990.
In 1997, he was Weapons Inspector of the International Police Task Force of Siroki, Monster Region, Bosnia-Herzegovina, responsible for monitoring and reporting compliance by local police to weapon restrictions. Mr Alhassan also served with the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, United Nations Headquarters in New York from 1999 to 2002 as a Civilian Police Officer.
