As part of its Pan-African corporate strategy to renew and reinforce its brand as the dominant Bank on the continent, Barclays Africa has appointed Simon Dornoo, 39-year-old Finance Director of Barclays Bank of Ghana, as its Chief Financial Officer, effective from 5th February 2001.

His appointment closely follows that of four new MDs: Isaac Takawira in Kenya, Margaret Mwsanakatwe in Zambia (the first woman in this position), Alexander Jongwe in Zimbabwe and Duncan Mlazie in Botswana (the country's first Botswana-born MD). These African bankers make up a select circle in Barclays Africa together with Kobina Quansah, MD in Ghana, and Wagdi Rabbat in Egypt.

Simon Dornoo was born in Ghana.

He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1988 and began his career with KPMG, where he led auditing teams and provided special financial reviews for government and institutions, including the World Bank. From 1990, he held senior executive positions in merchant banking in Accra, until he joined Barclays Bank of Ghana as Financial Director in 1999.

With a history of more than 100 years on the continent, Barclays Africa is the largest Barclays network outside the U.K. and offers full retail and corporate banking facilities in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Egypt and Indian Ocean Islands of Mauritius and Seychelles.

Barclays Africa operated 250 branches in the 10 counties with a network of over 180 ATMs. With more than 6,500 employees it serves a customer base of 1.5 million.

Issued on behalf of Barclays Africa & Barclays Ghana.
