Lagos -- Members of the Ghana Anaesthetist Society have urged Dr. Oviemo O. Ovadje of the Nigerian Army Medical Corps and School to make available the Eatset invention for autologous blood transfusion in the West African subregion.

Making the call at a biannual symposium organised by the society and sponsored by Roche pharmaceuticals (Gha-na), Prof. Adu Gyami, president of the association, noted that the introduction of the Eatset transfusion device was long over due.

In a statement made available in Lagos, it was stated that the organisers of the seminar agreed that Eatset will help to reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS not only in the sub region, but in Africa and other developing countries.

In response, Ovadje stated that the promoters of the device were doing everything possible to make the equipment available to hospitals in all developing coutries at affordable cost.

He said that the delay was because of the inherent difficulties in the sub-region and the absence of enabling environment. He, however assured that about 10,000 units of the device, manufactured in India were yet to arrive Nigeria.

Ovadje also disclosed that he was yet to identify an outfit for local sterilisation of the products, which are to be imported into Nigeria as completely knocked down component parts.

His decision not to finalise the product in India, he said was to prevent infringment. He said because Nigeria is the originator of the product, it should make some contribution to the manufacturing process.
