Ghanaian Muslim youth are frustrated – Muslim cleric

Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Shaibu Aremeyaw, has stated that Muslim youth in the various universities in Ghana are frustrated and must be monitored closely.

According to him, the unbearable hardship on Muslim youth at the tertiary level makes them vulnerable to the lure of religious extremism.

The comments come on the back of reports that a Ghanaian Muslim has joined the Islamist militant group Isis.

The 25-year- old graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has thrown his family into a massive discomfort, as he is believed to have joined the bloodthirsty group in Iraq and Syria.

Speaking to Radio Gold Wednesday, Sheikh Shaibu said Muslim leaders must begin to monitor the activities of the youth closely.

“The Muslim leadership must begin to monitor the activities of these youth seriously. Many of them in the universities are frustrated and are looking for support everywhere.

“They go to all kinds of embassies looking for support thereby making them vulnerable to these extremist groups. There must be conscious efforts to support and assist them,” he noted.

He also dismissed perceptions that Islam is seeking to take over the political leadership of the world.
