Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has called for a thorough investigation into the fatal shooting of Ghanaian teenager Javits Frimpong in the Bronx, New York.

In a statement released on October 30, 2026, Ambassador Smith highlighted five concerns arising from the tragedy: racial bullying, an impartial investigation, discrimination, accountability and violence.

Racial bullying: He described reports of bullying Frimpong allegedly experienced at school as deeply disturbing and said they must be considered as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

Investigation: He urged the relevant law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial probe to establish the facts.

Discrimination: The ambassador stressed the need to protect children from racial discrimination, regardless of their race, nationality or background.

Justice and accountability: He called for anyone found responsible to be identified and held accountable following the investigation.

Violence: He emphasised the importance of protecting children from violence and ensuring that they can live and learn in safety and dignity.

Ambassador Smith also conveyed the government’s condolences to the bereaved family, saying Ghana stood in solidarity with them.

“On behalf of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the Government, and the people of the Republic of Ghana, I convey our deepest sympathies and stand in solidarity with you and your family in this moment of immeasurable grief,” he stated.

He described Javits’ death as a loss to the nation.

“Javits was not merely a son to his family; he was a young Ghanaian whose life and future mattered to our nation,” he said.

He added that the tragedy highlighted the collective responsibility to ensure that every child could pursue their dreams without fear, discrimination or violence.
