Accra, Sept. 21, GNA - An Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday discharged two Ghanaian Times sports journalists, Mr Emmanuel Amponsah and Mr John Vigah, who had been standing trial for extortion since August last year.
The Court presided over by Justice Nathaniel Osam discharged the journalists based on the nolle prosequi filed by the Attorney General's Department.
When the case was called, the prosecutor, Chief Superintendent Kadija told the court that the police had received a 'nolle prosequi' from the AG's office, indicating that it was no longer interested in prosecuting the case.
The court therefore discharged the journalists.
Mr Amponsah and Mr Vigah were arraigned in court and charged with extortion and conspiracy respectively for allegedly demanding 100 million cedis from Mr Samuel Anim Obiri, one time Special Assistant to Mr Rashid Bawa, when the latter was Minister of State in charge of Education, Youth and Sports, in order to kill a negative story about him.
