A Ghanaian migrant who was detained in a restricted area of the Guarulhos International Airport in Brazil has passed away due to health issues.

According to Reuters, the 39-year-old died after receiving care at the medical station at the airport while being held with a group of inadmissible travellers who did not have documents or visas to enter Brazil.

Additionally, the migrant reportedly died on August 13 with the cause of his death still unknown.

The incident has raised concerns about the possible human rights violations at the airport.

Due to the high migratory flow in the country, the airport lacks infrastructure to accommodate migrants, therefore resulting in children and adolescents sleeping on the floor.

Many migrants from India and Vietnam without visas are left stranded at the airport, with no access to food and water.

Other concerns include many migrants showing flu-like symptoms, following an assessment by the airport authorities.

As part of attempts to stop the large inflow of migrants, the Brazilian government plans to tighten entry rules, the report added.

This will prevent migrants from using Brazil as a transit on their way to the USA and Canada.

Meanwhile, the Public Defenders Office has called for rapid improvements in the living conditions of migrants stuck at the airport while their status is being resolved.
