Ghanaian players abroad: Team Of The Week

Formation: 4-4-2

Seidu Mutawakilu (Enugu Rangers- Nigeria)

Mutawakilu has been one the side’s key performers despite their inconsistent performance in the campaign. The lanky shot-stopper kept up his good display against Wikki Tourist last week as he stood tall on two occasions to help his side defeat Sunshine Stars 1-0 at home.

Joseph Attamah Larweh (Istanbul Basaksehir-Turkey)

Naturally, a centre back but with the lack of right footed lateral defenders and the growing number of fine central defenders, Attamah Larweh is picked as our makeshift right back of the week. The 23-year-old gave an assured performance in the opening day of the Turkish SuperLig as Istanbul Basaksehir pipped Bursaspor 1-0, and twice went close to getting his name on the score sheet.

Lumor Agbenyanu (Portimonense-Portugal)

The 20-year-old was decent in possession against Sporting Braga. He cleared three goal bound moves, very steady and produced top notch defending all through the match despite his side ending the game with a 2-1 loss.

Abraham Frimpong (Red Star Belgrade-Serbia)

After being handed a rare start, Frimpong gave a decent outing for Red Star against FK Backa and capped it with a goal. His intelligent reading of the game came to bear during a one-v-two situation, which he came out top. If his display was anything to go by, Frimpong’s place in the team is cemented.

Kassim Nuhu (Young Boys-Switzerland)

Growing in confidence, great passer of the ball and one of the club’s most important players since he permanently joined from Spanish side Real Mallorca after spending last season on loan. He was a tower at the back and scored a thumping header to cap his scintillating display against lower-tier side Breitenrain in Swiss Cup.

Christian Atsu (Newcastle United- England)

Despite the Magpies suffering a defeat upon their return to the elite division, Atsu gave a good account of himself by taking the game to the Hotspurs defenders. He was technically superb and his distributions were top notch.

Afriyie Acquah (Torino- Italy)

The most improved Ghanaian player in the last nine-months, grit marking, iron clad defending and decent shooting power, Acquah won virtually all his one-on-one tackles in their 7-1 mauling of Trapani Calcio in the Coppa Italia round of 32.

Godsway Donyoh (Nordsjaelland FC- Denmark)

Donyoh was magnificent for the side in their 4-3 loss at Midtylland. He took the game by the scruff of the neck when they were 4-nil down by getting a brace. He was the orchestrator as he spread play all through the game. He made our team of the week based on this performance and the goals he scored.

Raymond Gyasi (Stabaek- Norway)

After getting one over his elder brother Edwin in the Norwegian Cup in midweek, Raymond followed up with that performance with a fine strike in their 2-2 stalemate at Haugesund. He was constant threat to their opponent throughout the game. His work rate is something of great importance, not mentioning his quick feet and pace. There is more room for improvement for the budding winger.

Jordan Ayew (Swansea City-England)

He was good in the air, flicked about two decent chances against Southampton, nearly had an assist for Tammy Abraham but the young forward fluffed his effort. His pace and work ethic was of great importance to Paul Clement’s side. He played full throttle and will be hoping to build on it when Manchester United come to the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

Ebenezer Assifuah (Le Havre- France)

What a start! Assifuah is on a goal scoring spree after once again finding the back of the net for Le Havre in their 3-0 win over Paris FC. His pace was too much for Paris FC defenders to handle coupled with his Kante-esque work rate upfront. The strike was his fourth of the campaign in three games.
