A Ghanaian part-time teacher, who doubles as a digital satellite installer, Joshua Adu Guni, has cried out for help to break away from his addiction to betting. This is after he has gambled away huge sums of money, including money meant for his father's medical bills.
In a video shared on Instagram by zionfelix.com, Joshua said that he started betting in 2019 when he was in school.
He stated, "I started betting in 2019 but I became addicted when a friend introduced me to casino, He introduced me rollete in 2020. He didn't really teach but he used my phone to bet and gave me money when he won which caught my attention."
He further said that he was working with his uncle at Kasoa during that time and he gradually used a sum of GH¢7,000 belonging to his uncle to bet.
"My uncle asked me to sell his plumbing materials. After I sold them I got GH¢7,000 and went to give him the money but he wasn't around. Three days later, I started using the money to gamble bit by bit. By the time I realised it was finished."
According to Joshua what he did destroyed his relationship with his uncle who was sponsoring his education at Ideal College. He had to stop schooling because his uncle stopped the sponsorship.
He added that another huge sum of money he used for betting was an amount of GH¢15,000 meant for his father's hospital bills, and GH¢5,000 of his mother's money was also used to bet.
Joshua added that he even used customers' money to engage in betting.
He explained that he sometimes sells his phone when he loses a bet and things move on successfully but starts betting immediately after he gets a new phone.
Joshua who said it wasn’t easy to break away from a betting addiction added that he is ready to receive any help that may come his way.
"I will be very happy if someone wants to help me. If there is rehab and the person wants to take me there. I am fully devoted, even if it's right now I don't have a problem I am ready to stop."
He added, "Someone said it is spiritual but I don't believe it."
He said he is still living with his parents in their family house while all his younger siblings are married with kids.
Joshua advised the youth to abstain from betting because it is "deadly."
