A two-man UN team has ended a five-day working visit to the country to assess the preparedness of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for deployment in peacekeeping in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The team was made up of the Chief of Joint Logistics Operations of the United Nations Mission in the DRC (MONUC), Colonel Xavier de Chambord of France and Lt Col Bailo Dionc of Senegal.
A statement on Thursday by the GAF's Directorate of Public Relations said the team expressed satisfaction with the preparations GAF was making when it called on the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Lt Gen Seth Obeng.
Col Xavier said though MONUC was facing some difficulties from the eastern part of the DRC due to the concentration of armed elements, the impending inter-Congolese dialogue scheduled for the 15th of this month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, would lead to disarmament and the repatriation of foreign troops.
Gen. Obeng reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to global peace.
Ghanaian troops are expected to depart to the DRC in a fortnight to take part in peacekeeping operations.
