A group in The Netherlands that calls itself The Concerned Citizens of Ghana has presented a petition to Ghana?s parliament to amend the Representation of the People's Law, 1992 (PNDCL 284) and in support of the Representation of the People Amendment Bill.
Mr. J. Atta Nuamah, a resident of The Hague led the delegation and presented the petition at the Ghana Embassy in the Dutch administrative capital, The Hague to the Ambassador Her Excellency Mrs. Grace Amponsa-Ababio.
In his presentation, Mr Atta Nuamah noted that all well-meaning Ghanaians are satisfied with provisions made in article 42 of the constitution adding that, the provision does not demand any Residential or Logistical qualifications before being registered as a voter.
Mr. Nuamah, however, lamented that the discrimination towards Ghanaians resident abroad goes far beyond the issue of disenfranchisement. ?The perpetual adherence to People's Law, 1992 PNDCL 284 does not only prohibit Ghanaians resident abroad the right to vote but perpetually disqualify any of us from being a member of Parliament (MP)? he noted.
?Today, we agitate for the passing of this bill, so that our Children and Grand Children will be the best judges and commend the Parliament when this Bill shall be passed into Law. GHANA WILL BE THE BENEFICIARY!? Mr .Atta Nuamah, concluded.
Receiving the petition on behalf of the Speaker Parliament, Ambassador Grace Amponsah-Ababio, reminded the group that she and her entire staff are committed to working in the interest of Ghanaians, and to promote her image abroad.
She said under the current Ghana?s democracy, her outfit would welcome diverse views on all issues concerning the nation?s development from the community and assured the group that she would submit the petition to the Speaker of the House.
Other representatives of the group present at the ceremony were, Rosina Bamfo, Kobby Annan, Martin Yaw Frimpong, Alberta Akena, all members and Kwabena Sanwu, studio manager of Akasanoma radio in Amsterdam.
