Minister for Tourism and Creative Arts, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has told the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, that the days of Ghanaians having short memories are long over.

John Mahama, while serving as President in 2013, accused Ghanaians of easily forgetting the achievements of his administration and instead focusing on the negatives that made headlines that year.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Revival Restoration Centre of the Assemblies of God Church in Accra in 2023, Mr. Mahama said the government had managed to deal with several problems, including the energy crisis, multiple labor unrests, and economic challenges.

“The country has had a challenging year, that is true. We had market fires, and I’m sure most of you have forgotten about the market fire. We had the energy crisis, which was popularly called ‘Dumsor,’ and I was appropriately labeled the ‘apostle of Dumsor.’ Ghanaians, in their usual humor, crafted a very interesting greeting that said, ‘Yema mo dumsor oo,’ and the response was, ‘Yaa Mahama.’

"I told them that I was working on the energy crisis and that we would solve it. I said that when we did, they should remember to use the greeting, ‘Yema mo Kania oo,’ with the response, ‘Yaa Mahama.’ However, very often in Ghana, we have a very short memory.

"The energy crisis is solved, and we don’t remember the darkness we were in. We have put that behind us, and we are now looking at the other challenges," Mahama said.

However, speaking on Asaasepa FM, as monitored by GhanaWeb, Andrew Egyapa Mercer said Ghanaians have a retentive memory and would not forget the difficulties they experienced under the Mahama administration, which is why they will not vote to return Mahama to power on December 7.

"Mahama needs to realize that Ghanaians are fully aware and no longer suffer from the so-called short memory syndrome. You underestimate Ghanaians at your own peril. Have you forgotten that at one point, doctors were using torchlights to perform surgeries in Ghana? Do you think Ghanaians have forgotten? Former President Mahama said Ghanaians have short memories. He should be told that the membership of the 'short memory association' has drastically reduced. Ghanaians are wide awake now, and when they see the vision of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, they are excited," the Minister stated.
