The shocking news of striker Asamoah Gyan’s retirement from the Black Stars, barely a month to a major tournament has been greeted with mixed reaction by some Ghanaians who have been speaking to Ghanaweb.com.

Yesterday, Monday, May 20, Gyan who holds the title as Ghana’s all-time top goal scorer with 51 goals announced his decision to call time on his illustrious sixteen years national team career.

In a very emotional press release, Gyan alluded to the fact that he could no longer go on playing for the national team when the coach has decided to name a new captain while he is still actively playing.

The news and timing of his announcement has led to fears that Ghana could have a destabilized campaign at the 2019 AFCON which starts in Egypt from June 21.

But speaking to some Ghanaians on the impact of Gyan’s retirement, others were of the view that his exclusion and retirement from the team is good news because it will pave way for young talents to spring up and gain experience on the field.

One interviewee said “since time immemorial when Asamoah Gyan was the Black Stars captain, he couldn’t win any cup for Ghana, neither is there any achievements for Ghana to boast of during his era. Andre Ayew is capable of managing and carrying the team into victory.”

Meanwhile, others had contrary views to those who say Gyan’s retirement is not a big deal.

Making reference to the time Asamoah Gyan was on injury, one ardent admirer of Gyan claimed that in recent times the team looked hopeless and couldn’t play to expectation because there was no ‘ Asamoah Gyan’ to even score a goal.

Watch below what some Ghanaians make of Gyan’s retirement and the impact it could have on the Black Stars chances at the 2019 AFCON.
