Former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Professor Emmanuel Martey has chided Ghanaians for the lack of ardor and commitment to their ‘watch dog’ role in holding political leaders of the country accountable for their actions.

Rather than focus on ‘being on the neck’ of these leaders to ensure they do the right things and criticizing them continuously for their failure to do same, Ghanaians would on any day prefer calling for the ‘heads’ of footballers, coaches and captains of the National and local football teams he says.

Misplaced priorities is how he describes it. For him, a constant, conscious effort on the part of every Ghanaian to hold accountable every politician from the very top to the very least particularly for failure to perform their expected roles and effectively for that matter should be the utmost priority of every Ghanaian as this will leave no room for mediocrity and negligence on their part.

“I’m amazed at how Ghanaians expect better performance from the National football team; the Black Star players and I’m amazed how both Kotoko and hearts of Oak supporters expect more from their team players than their constituency Members of Parliament. Ghanaians expect more from footballers, the coaches. Let Ghana Black Stars lose two, three consecutive times and all Ghanaians will shout that the coach should be sacked. How many have called on politicians who mess up, who in an election year will take the State’s money to distribute cars like we distribute oranges”.

Prof. Martey was speaking at the Agape House New Testament Church on the topic ‘Address The Mess - “The Mess in Our Nation”.

Rt. Rev. Professor Emmanuel Martey is the immediate past Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.
