A Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Dr Linda Forde has described the inability of many Ghanaians, particularly teachers, to speak and write good English as a national catastrophe.

Dr Forde who was the guest speaker at Ridge Church School’s 60th anniversary ‘Speech and Prize-Giving’ ceremony in Accra on Saturday stated that even though English is the most important language in the world, most Ghanaians “who claim to be literate cannot speak or write good English”.

She said, “it drives a knife into my heart when I hear adverts on the radio, I hear media people, I hear teachers who cannot provide the ‘TH’ sound”.

She called on government to invest more “teaching into the total infrastructure and system for teacher training and supervision” adding that “more budgetary provision should be made to make the teaching profession become as attractive as it ought to be”.
