Ghanaians march in support of Palestine

Hundreds of Ghanaians defied early morning rains and marched through the streets of Accra in support of Palestinian cause against Israeli aggression in the Middle East.

The demonstrators sent two petitions to the UN representative in Ghana as well as Parliament. The Ghana Solidarity Campaign, organizers of the demonstration are demanding the immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from occupied Arab lands and an arms embargo on Israel. They are also demanding the release of all Palestinian political prisoners being held in Israeli jails and an immediate end to torture and abuse.

The group said it was forced to petition the UN due to ?the Israeli government?s disregard for the authority of the United Nations and International Law and opinion.? It said the recent attacks on Palestinians are a ?line long of aggression directed at the Palestinian people and the suppression of their international recognized right to a state of their own.?

According to the group, the world will never know the full extent of killings and destruction inflicted on the Palestinian people by the latest Israeli invasion since even the United Nations was prevented from carrying out an enquiry at the most infamous site of killing and destruction - Jenin.

?Despite Israeli obstructionism, it is clear from credible evidence that the Israeli troops committed serious illegalities,? the petition said. We are also concerned about the reported torture and maltreatment of some of the many people taken prisoners by the Israelis during the last military offensive many of whom are being held under harsh conditions.?

The group also called for the posting of an international peace keeping along the Palestinian-Israeli border. The Ghana Palestinian Solidarity Campaign is made up of the Association for Pan-Islamic Co-operation, International Socialist Organisation, National Reform Party, Socialist Reform and All African People?s Revolutionary Party.
