On April 19, 2011, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams reported on the siege of Misrata, Libya. I saw the broadcast and it was evident that among the numerous foreigners trapped in Misrata are many Ghanaians. In the NBC report from Misrata, Ghanaians can be seen displaying Ghana flags and pleading for help. This touched my heart!! I do not know any of these Ghanaians I saw on the news broadcast, but as a fellow Ghanaian, I felt compelled to do something. This is why I am writing this piece urging President Atta Mills, the Foreign Minister and the Minister of Transportation to arrange with their Libyan counterparts to implement a plan to get our fellow citizens out of Misrata and home safely and as soon as possible.
Earlier this year, during his news conference, President John Atta Mills declared that the year 2011 is an action year. It is April 2011 and Mr. President, Ghanaians are suffering in Misrata and the time for action is now!! Let us all pray and hope that those who are desperately displaying the Ghanaian flag in Misrata can be assured that holding tightly to the flag will eventually mean something with the Ghanaian government meeting its obligation and ensuring that our citizens emerge out of this perilous situation unharmed.
Once again, Mr. President, us you eloquently announced, 2011 is a year of action and we need you to act now and uphold your oath of office to defend the constitution of Ghana and ensure the safety and welfare of Ghanaians worldwide. For those Ghanaians holding the Ghana flag in Misrata, Libya, be rest assured that your fellow Ghanaian saw you on the news broadcast and conveyed your plight to our government. It is up to our government to put plans in place to rescue you and ensure your safe journey back home.
May God Bless Ghana our homeland!!
