Ghanaians urged to know their rights

Kumasi, May 24, GNA - A Kumasi based human rights lawyer has urged Ghanaians to strive to know their fundamental human rights since that was the surest way to safeguard violations.

Mr Ernest Owusu-Dapaa, who is also the chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Human Rights and Advocacy Legal Research (CHRALER) a human rights NGO, said most peoples' rights were being trampled upon as a result of ignorance.

He was speaking at a public legal education campaign organized for members of the Bomso SDA Church and the Youth Movement of the Ascension Baptist Church, also at Bomso in the Kumasi metropolis. Speaking on the fundamental human rights of the individual, Mr Owusu-Dapaa, said the dignity of a man could be safeguarded through respect for his fundamental human rights.

He said the entrenchment of these rights in the constitution indicated the importance attached to human rights and that it placed a greater responsibility on every person to uphold the rights of their fellow persons.

Mr Owusu-Dapaa said the NGO had created a legal aid clinic department to address issues of human rights violations, especially against the poor and vulnerable in society.

He called on Ghanaians to jealously guard against human rights abuses in their communities.
