Ghanaians urged to liberate themselves

Accra, Oct 28, GNA - An association known as Ghana Social Democratic Movement (GSDM) on Friday called on Ghanaians to wake up and shake themselves out of the shackles of poverty by demanding from their leaders true freedom, justice and peace.

Mr Emmanuel Kofi Adamu, Volta Regional Secretary of the Movement, said what the late Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah fought for and declared that Ghana was free forever had become a mirage because after 48 years of independence "we must face the tragic fact that the average Ghanaian was still not free. We still have to depend on developed economies for our survival."

Mr Adamu who was speaking at a press briefing in Accra, said in Ghana only a few were living with the rest only surviving. He questioned what was preventing Ghana from realising full humanity and rather choose to live under less human conditions instead of aspiring and actually, frantically reaching a state of self-actualisation of full human conditions.

"We need to be free from negative cultural tendencies, attitudes, have a radical paradigm shift in our work ethics, religious tendencies, political ambitions and economic agenda.

He said those cultural practices that took the country back should be critically examined and rejected.

He said the Movement, therefore, demanded freedom, peace, and justice for the people of Ghana.

"We GSDM refuse to believe that the bank of justice was bankrupt. We refuse to accept that there is insufficient justice in the great vaults of opportunity in this nation. "Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all Ghanaians. Lift the nation from the political and tribal mistrust and suspicion that created conditions, which encouraged nepotism and favouritism.

Mr Prince Adu, Founder of the Movement, said the Movement was apolitical and a platform for the youth to dialogue and create awareness among themselves that there was the need for them, who were the future leaders, to fight against neo-colonialism and imperialism. He said the Movement was formed out of vision to transform the nation into one that would ensure a more democratic, just, accountable and transparent society.

He said for the first time Ghanaians would see a courageous leader, who would not shy away from the truth "and this new African would ensure that never again should Ghanaians shed the bitter tears in the history of the country."
