A democratic and good governance Think-tank, the Ghartey Institute of Good Governance, has been established to propagate the essence of good governance and tenets of democracy among the grassroots in Ghana.

The Ghartey Institute of Good Governance (GIGG) has been set up as a non-governmental organization (NGO) by a group of Ghanaians based in the United States of America with technical advice and support from some staff of the Center for Politics of University of Virginia, and Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership all in the State of Virginia, USA.

The GIGG has realized that there are a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as well as civil society organizations that are also involved in promoting the tenets of democracy in Ghana but most of these organizations trade their activities in the big cities in Ghana, especially, in Accra the capital city of Ghana leaving out people in the other regions and districts.

The Ghartey Institute of Good Governance is determined to take issues concerning democracy to the grassroots of the country. In other words, GIGG would like to explore the ideas of people from the districts, cities, towns, and villages, and involve them in shaping their participation in democracy and good governance, and also be able to hold political leaders accountable for their actions and inactions.

It is also the desire of GIGG to let Ghanaians appreciate the fact that good governance in democracy does not mean political activities by political parties. Good governance implies that the governors must be accountable to the people, and the people must demand stewardship of the governors on issues concerning corruption, security, health, jobs, education, food security, and provision of infrastructure that would make the life of the people worth living.

The GIGG has been officially registered in Ghana and has been issued with a certificate to commence business as a non-governmental organization.

It has Mr. Nana Akyeampong-Ghartey, a Ghanaian based in Charlottesville in the State of Virgina, USA and a former Advisory Board Member on Community Service to former Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia as the Executive Director and is headquartered in Accra.

Ghartey Institute of Good Governance is preparing for the official launching soon in Accra.
