'Girl child education is my priority'

Madam Florence Abena Gyasi, an aspiring assembly woman for the Tewobotom Electoral area in the Birim Central District, has emphasized the need to have a concerted effort in reducing teenage pregnancy to improve upon girls’ education.

She believes that without education or any form of training for girls, the issue of women not being economically empowered and not getting involved in decision making positions, would remain unchanged.

Madam Gyasi, in an interview with GNA, said issues concerning the girl child and women in general could only be championed by women, hence her decision to go to the assembly and rally all stakeholders to advocate and help address challenges impeding girls’ education.

She indicated that as a an elderly woman in her community, she was concerned about the many girls who dropped out of school because of teenage pregnancies, leading to early marriages and its associated problems, saying that informed her decision to contest.

Madam Gyasi added that when given the mandate, she would ensure that bye-laws of the Assembly that protect the interest of the girl-child education and women’s empowerment would be strictly adhered to.

She therefore appealed to women in the Tewobotom electoral area to go out and vote massively for her.

According to her, women outnumbered men in the area and so if all women voted for her she would undoubtedly emerged the winner come September 1st.

The aspirant disclosed that due to her passion for women and children, she had offered her house to be used as a weighing clinic and immunization centre for babies for the past 17 years, pointing out that she only needed a larger platform to support her community.

Madam Gyasi, a businesswoman, who is battling it out with three men, said she is optimistic that since she represented the aspirations and concerns of the girl child, her fellow women would vote for her convincingly to win the contest.
