Saltpond (CR), July 14, GNA- The Mfantseman District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service has formed Girls Education Sub-Committees in communities in the District. The committees made up of five-members are to monitor the activities and movements of girls in the communities especially at night.

A workshop funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) had been organised to sensitise committee members on their roles. Mrs Matilda Bannerman-Mensah, District Director of Education, emphasised the importance of girl-child education. She stated that if the society wanted to move fast, the education of girls should be taken seriously.

The District of Education Director appealed to members of the committees to work hard to remove all social, cultural and religious impediments, which impeded girl-child education in their communities. Miss Julia Damalie, District Girl-Child Education Officer, said the Directorate was compiling a list of girls who had dropped-out of school to offer them assistance to enable the to return to school. She urged the committees to help in the exercise to register dropouts.

Some of the topics treated were, parental aspirations for children, relevance of the curriculum to daily life and the importance of the education of girls.
