Madam Esther Boateng, Northern Regional Programmes Manager of ActionAid-Ghana, has observed that the girls’ mentorship programme of the organisation has been instrumental in impacting positively on the social and psychological development of young girls.

She said her outfit has since 2001, organised annual regional and national girls’ camps that had helped many young females in remote parts of the country to become useful citizens who are contributing meaningfully to the socio-economic development of the country.

Madam Boateng who was speaking at the closing ceremony of a week-long regional girls’ camp in Tamale at the weekend, advised the beneficiaries to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them to develop their capacities to become useful adults for the nation and their families.

The camp was attended by more than 80 girls selected from the Nanumba North and Bole districts and the Tamale Metropolis.

They were taught various topics including personal hygiene, assertiveness, sexual reproduction and sexuality, career choices and site seeing.

It was organised by ActionAid-Ghana and its partners on the theme: “Empowering girls through education: securing national development.”

Some of the girls who exhibited good performance in a reading competition were rewarded with exercise books while all the participants were given novels.

The mentorship programme is a process of inculcating good morals and career development in girls to enhance their development.
