Thu, 14 Aug 1997 Source: --

Anfoega, Aug.12 ---Commodore Steve Obimpeh, MP for North Dayi has suggested that mission schools should be given back to churches to manage to ensure effective supervision and discipline among school children. He said it is not for nothing that people of the older generation openly boast of being Presbyterian or catholic trained. Cdr. Obimpeh who was speaking at the first open day of Anfoega Catholic hospital primary school yesterday said a recent evaluation of the performance of pupils in public schools established that "we are producing half baked literates who lacked the discipline to face the realities of life." He said this does not augur well for the manpower development of the country and stressed that something must be done to bring back the Presbyterian and catholic disciplines which moulded the character of the youth to become great statesmen. ........" What we must not lose sight of is that education without good character and disciplined behaviour is of no value," he said, and urged parents to co-operate with teachers in the moral up- bringing of their children. The Right Reverend Francis Lodonu, Bishop of Ho said religion must be taught in schools otherwise the country would be producing scholars who would only believe in "the survival of the fittest." He said children must be educated in such a way that they would have the ethics to distinguish between right and wrong "which will lead them to know the privileges and the limitations to their freedom for them to behave responsibly." .."Our schools should strive to develop strong Christian moral principles and teachers should instil these into the pupils so that we can all be proud of them."
