President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo must fulfill the key promises he made to Ghanaians for which he was voted into power, Mr Bernard Mornah, National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has said.

Mr Mornah said the president must stop focusing on building a national cathedral and rather deliver what he promised the people of Ghana in the lead-up to the 2016 elections.

The Akufo-Addo administration is set to construct a 5,000-seat National Cathedral in Accra.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta told parliament last year that the government would use proceeds from a global fundraising activity to build the edifice.

He said although the cathedral will be a 5,000-seat facility, it will be expandable to accommodate 15,000 people, with spaces for national events and celebrations.

“It will include, among others, a grand central hall, a music school, and will house Africa’s first-ever Bible Museum and documentation centre,” he said.

Ghana’s parliament also, recently unearthed plans to build a 450-seat chamber at an estimated cost of $200 million.

The intention has been suspended following a deluge of public backlash.

Speaking at the ‘Kum y?n pr?ko’ demonstration on Tuesday, 9 July 2019 organised by the Coalition for Social Justice in Accra, Mr Mornah said: “Enough of the economic hardships, you didn’t promise us a national cathedral and chamber for parliament. Focus on providing us the factories and the dams you promised Ghanaians.

“Give the $200 million intended for the new chamber to the MPs to provide good drinking water and other social needs for their constituents; that is what they need and not a new chamber.”

He added: “Enough of the kidnappings in Ghana, enough of the harassment of journalists in Ghana.”
