The Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, is making headlines after Speaker Bagbin rejected the NPP caucus's request for a parliamentary recall to address urgent government matters.
In a memo to the leader of government business on November 26, 2024, Bagbin stated that summoning the House just a few days before the elections would not be in the nation's best interest.
He explained that the parliamentary calendar acknowledges election campaign periods, during which the government and Members of Parliament present their manifestos and hold themselves accountable to Ghanaians for the mandate they have been given.
In conclusion, Alban Bagbin said, "The House will resume sitting after the elections to complete all essential matters before a seamless transition to the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana."
On the back of this, Ghanaian netizens are 'mocking' Afenyo-Markin for having his request turned down.
These critics are calling on him to seek another order from the Supreme Court to compel the Speaker to recall Parliament.

If I were Afenyo Markin, I would just file an Application for an Order of Mandamus at the Supreme Court at 11am Tomorrow. At least he is certain of a ruling by 12 noon and Parliament will sit.

Big 2024 is when an Electoral Commission of Ghana wants to LIMIT media access to election coverage?
— Saddick Adams (@SaddickAdams) November 27, 2024
Not 1992?
What is the EC’s capacity to determine what a credible media person/house is?
Who amongst them thought it wise to moot and actually approve such a stinking decision.
While the EC has been up to no good there is also acute water shortage in various parts of Accra

The directive of the EC to restrict media access to collation centres undermines Press Freedom guaranteed under the 1992 Constitution.
— Francis-Xavier Sosu (@fx_sosu) November 27, 2024
The directive is a recipe for chaos and disaster and can potentially undermine our democracy. The EC must reverse this unconstitutional… pic.twitter.com/qUTX4CUJBC
