Tarkwa, June 9, GNA - Goldfields Ghana Limited (GFGL), Tarkwa mine, has embarked on a tree planting exercise on the premises of the new Tarkwa Government Hospital and the Goldfields School Complex.

This was done to climax the World Environment Day celebration which falls on June 5 of every year.

The company, with support from pupils and teachers of the Goldfields school Complex, representative from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Water Resource Commission (WRC), and Municipal Directorate of Education planted 150 trees at the new hospital and 50 on the school compound.

The theme for this year's celebration was 93Forest: Nature at your service".

Speaking at the function, Community Affairs and Public Relations officer, Mr Mubashiru T. Dare, said the nation was gradually losing its nature reserves.

He said every Ghanaian needed to assist in preserving forest and water bodies from persons who illegally tempered with them.

The Environmental Manager of GFGL, Mr Benedict Addo, said the company embarked on the exercise to ensure that by the time the hospital becomes operational, the trees would provide a serene atmosphere to the sick and staff of the hospital.

The Municipal Director of Education, Mrs Catherine Davis, said the main objective of the celebration was to encourage forest preservation.
