Gomoa Akropong (Central Region) 27 Jan. '99

Gomoa Akropong (Central Region) 27 Jan. '99 The Gomoa District Assembly has decided to take strict measures against parents who will attack and assault teachers when their wards are disciplined in school. Mr Kow Anyanful, Gomoa District Chief Executive, announced this when he commissioned a three-classroomed and library blocks estimated at 57-million cedis for the Aboso-Benso Upper Primary School in Gomoa Akropong at the weekend. The DCE said the assembly would not hesitate to institute stiff punishment to any parent who will take the law into his or her own hands, and urged both parents and school authorities to co- operate to ensure effective teaching and learning. Mr Anyanful however cautioned teachers in the district not to take the assembly's decision as a licence to punish school children recklessly. Now that Parliament has passed the Children's Right Bill, any parent who refuses to send his or her child to school will be prosecuted, he said. He was not happy about the last year's BECE results in the district and asked parents and teachers to work together to curb the falling standard of education in the district. Mr Anyanful said that the assembly spent 700 million cedis on education alone from its share of the common fund. Projects carried out included the rehabilitation of junior and senior secondary schools in the district.
