Gonjaland Gets New King

Northernghana.com is reliably informed and can confirm that successor to the late Yagbon-Wura Bawa Doshie I, King of Gonjaland traditional area has been appointed by the council of elders.

This is in line with calls by both former President John Agyekum Kufour and sitting Vice President John Dramani Mahama’s on the council of elders to get a worthy successor to the late Gonja king during the 7th day funeral prayer at Damongo on Friday January 22, 2010. After several consultations in line with the customs of the Gonjaland traditional area, the council of elders and king makers led by Sonyong-wura Seidu picked Kusawgu-Wura Tuntunba Sulemana Amanfo Jakpa as successor to the late Yagbon-Wura Bawa Doshie I who passed on January 1, 2010 at Damongo.

Kusawgu-Wura Tuntunba Sulemana Amanfo Jakpa will be outdoored in three months as the new Yagbon-Wura and his chieftaincy title will be conferred on him thereafter.

Mr Sualisu Biawuripe, District Chief Executive for Central Gonja told northernghana.com the announcement of Kusawgu-Wura Tuntunba Sulemana Amanfo Jakpa as the new Gonja King attracted massive jubilation on the streets of Kusawgu all night long.

According to Mr Biawuripe, the elevated Kusawgu chief was first enskined as Salawura and rose to Yapeiwura and to Kusawgu-Wura and now heading to the Yagbon paramouncy. The incoming Gonja King Kusawgu-Wura Tuntunba Sulemana Amanfo Jakpa is in his early 70s and married to three wives with several children.

The Kusawgu traditional area has four gates comprising the Jakpa gate where the new King is coming from, the Suale gate, the Adama and Mumuni or Wayo gates respectively. The Kusawgu traditional area is the fifth among the five royal paramouncies which ascend to Yagbon comprising Wasipe, Daboya, Kpembe, Bole and Tuliwe.
