Good News for Ghanair's US Travellers

The Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Capt. Joseph A. Boachie yesterday told journalists that extension of the runway at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) would reduce noise in the neighbourhood.

Speaking to the members of the newly established League of Aviation Journalists, Ghana (LAJG) at the KIA in Accra the Director General noted the national carrier, Ghana Airways which could not convey full cargo to US because of a short runway would now be able to send all its cargo outside.

In an answer to a question on whether the former airstrip situated at Afienya would still be renovated for use as an airport, the D-G answered in the negative. He said the GCAA is in the process of acquiring land at Ada as an alternative to the KIA to establish an airport in that vicinity.

The manager for Research and Publication of the GCAA, Mr. Eric T. Noi said the current rehabilitation work at the KIA would cost about $77m. GCAA is paying $34m from its own resources while the other $40m is a loan from the HSBC and Paribas, he said.
