Accra, Aug 10, GNA - Air Commodore Kwame Mamphey (RTD), the Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), has said one key requirement for national development was good journalism.

"I have always seen the press as partners in development," he told journalists in Accra on Monday.

The interaction was held by the GCAA to brief the media on the aviation industry and how best to report on aviation issues.

He said whilst events formed a good part of topics that journalists needed to report on it was also very important for newsmen to delve into that would generate discussion.

"When these discussions are held the ultimate result is progress and development."

Air Commodore Mamphey appealed to journalists to always make it a point to obtain information from accurate sources and that sending out information without adequate research could easily have negative consequences for individuals, organizations and the nation.

"Never hesitate to seek clarification on any point that may not be clear when you write your reports," he said.

Touching on aviation in Ghana, the GCAA Director General said the industry had made great progress from its early beginning in 1918.

He said the coming in of several airlines to operate at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as well as several airlines awaiting to be licensed to operate at the KIA bore proof that the GCAA had won the confidence of the aviation industry globally.

Air Commodore Mamphey said the GCAA would continue to insist on high standards in order to ensure that the confidence it had built in the aviation world both locally and internationally was maintained.
