Gov’t releases GH¢12.2m for free SHS

The government has released an amount of GH¢12,178,544.00 to pay for the Free Senior High School Program it's implementing nationwide.

The amount is meant to cater for the First Term of the 2015/2016 Academic Year.

A document cited by this website dated September 7, 2015 had the Ministry of Finance authorizing the Controller and Accountant-General to release the above-mentioned sum to the Minister of Education “to enable her pay for the implementation of progressively free secondary education program in the first term of the 2015/2016 academic year.”

“The sum of GH¢12,178,544.00 should be charged to and paid from the ABFA proceeds as per details on Specific Warrant No. 1510807. By a copy of this letter, the Chief Director, Ministry of Education is to ensure that the transaction is inputted into the GIFMIS Platform to facilitate the payment process,” the document in part read.

Sources at the Ministry of Education say the amount has since hit the Ministry’s account and is ready to be disbursed.

Our sources say President John Dramani Mahama will today present a dummy cheque of an undisclosed amount to the Minister of Education, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang to pay for the tuition of those who will be enrolled into the John Evans Atta Mills Senior High School when he commissions the school block at Ekumfi Otuam.
