Government asked to provide projects in peaceful areas

Nalerigu, (N/R), Sept. 22, GNA- Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, Paramount Chief of Mamprugu Traditional Area, has urged the Government to provide social services and projects in peaceful areas to help raise the living standards of the people.

He said it was a waste of resources for the Government to spend huge money in the maintenance of peace in areas where the people had created unnecessary conflicts.

Nayiri Sheriga said these when Mr. Ernest Debrah, Minister of Food and Agriculture paid a courtesy call on him at his palace at Nalerigu. The Paramount Chief said natural disasters and the outbreak of epidemics were things that deserved the attention and use of resources and not "Self-inflicted conflicts."

He expressed regret that the Northern Region had become notorious for conflicts and funds meant for development were being spent on the maintenance of peace and security.

Nayiri Sheriga in reference to the recent Bimoba/Konkomba conflict said a few miscreants created problems and crossed to neighbouring Togo where they could not be caught by the Ghanaian security agencies. He said the East Mamprusi area in particular lacked adequate police personnel and logistics and appealed to government to post more policemen to the district.

Nayiri Sheriga urged people of the Northern Region to be tolerant and accommodate one another towards the development of the area. Mr. Ernest Debrah assured the chief and the people that the government was concerned about their plight following the floods and that was why a committee had being set up to assess the extent of damage and find out how to assist them. The Minister is a member of the Cabinet Inter-Ministerial Task Force set up by the President to assess the extent of damage caused by the floods that recently devastated the Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions. 22 Sept. 07
