Government asked to sensitize schools on the need for tree planting

The ambassador of Italy to Ghana H.E. Giovanni Favilli has underscored the need to inculcate the spirit of tree planting to young persons as a means of safeguarding the environment against the devastative effects of climate change.

It is against this background that Greenway International, a non-governmental agency that advocates on environmental issues in collaboration with the Italian embassy here in Ghana have undertaken an interactive session with some youth from the academic and professional backgrounds on how to preserve and care for the planet.

Speaking at the program, the Country Director for Greenway International Foundation, Michael Olusegun Olusanya said the initiative contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals and one of the best ways of fighting climate change.

He says School Tree Planting provides learning opportunities to students and cultivates a sense of environmental stewardship in them.

As trees grow, they help stop climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the air, storing carbon in the trees and soil, and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.

Trees provide many benefits to us; they help shade buildings and pavement, reducing the heat and conserving energy.

Students from Galaxy International School and Professionals from Young Reporters for the Environment were present at the event.
