Government expands LEAP coverage to 450,000 households

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has disclosed that the government has expanded the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme to cover up to 450,000 households.

The expansion follows a comprehensive reassessment of existing beneficiaries using data from the Ghana National Household Registry to determine which households still qualify for support and which have moved out of extreme poverty.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on September 16, 2026, Dr Lartey said the reassessment of 350,000 beneficiary households had resulted in more than 226,000 households graduating from extreme poverty.

“The programme ceiling has expanded from 350,000 to 450,000 households,” she said.

She said the LEAP grant had also increased significantly, with the average bi-monthly payment rising from GH¢334 in 2024 to GH¢424 in 2025 and GH¢569 in 2026.

According to Dr Agnes Lartey, an indexation mechanism has been introduced to ensure that inflation does not erode the value of the grants going forward.

Under the new payment structure, households with one or two members will receive GH¢392 per bi-monthly cycle if they have a vulnerable member, and GH¢380 if they do not.

Households with three to four members will receive GH¢474 and GH¢452 respectively, while households with five or more members will receive GH¢630 or GH¢594, depending on whether they have a vulnerable member.

Dr Lartey added that the first and second payment cycles for 2026 commenced on Monday, September 14, with both cycles being paid together.
