Government plans to establish Land Court

Accra, March 4, GNA - Government is working on the establishment of a Land Court to tackle and facilitate procedures in the resolution of land litigation cases.

President John Agyekum Kufuor announced this when he unveiled the plaque to inaugurate a two-million-dollar three-storey Commercial Courts Building Complex for the Judicial Service in Accra on Friday.

The six Courts with the status of a High Court were designed, constructed and furnished by DANIDA to promote efficient, speedy and effective determination of commercial disputes.

He said the inauguration of the Commercial Court marked the beginning of the specialisation trend in the Judicial System and also new grounds in the administration of justice in the country. President Kufuor said after almost five decades of Independence, the structure and practice of the country's Judicial System had not undergone much updating.

He noted that the chequered political and economic history of the country's post-Independence period had frustrated efforts to modernise the Judicial System in line with the rapidly changing trends in the world.

President Kufuor said criminal fraud was assuming proportions of global concern while the advent of the era of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) had brought in its wake several high-tech crimes.

He said most of the crimes, which were quite unknown a few years ago, were proving exceptionally difficult to track and contain even in the developed countries.

President Kufuor said the Government was, therefore, urgently considering the establishment of another specialised Court where such crimes could be effectively and speedily prosecuted.
