Government provides Transport ministry GHC6.5million to fight road accidents

As part of efforts to minimise road clashes in the country, a total of GH¢6.5 million has been approved by government to champion the course of road safety in the country.

Minister for Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, made this known when he took the platform at ‘Meet the Press’ series Tuesday, February 19, to state government’s position in relation to topical issues surrounding his ministry.

Among other matters, he noted, the rising trend in fatalities resulting from road accidents needs urgent attention hence government’s decision to make adequate provisions to curb the menace.

He indicated that although work has been done to improve conditions of poor roads in the country, there is still a lot of such roads out there that needs to be fixed to ensure safety of both drivers and pedestrians.

Again he observed, the ‘blatant’ disregard for safety practices on the part of motorists especially ‘okadamen’ is a continuous menace begging for serious attention and government in this regard plans to intensify public knowledge on road usage as well as punish road offenders.

“The state of road accidents continues to be a matter of concern to government. Drivers have been killed and others injured as a result of indiscipline and their disrespect for road traffic regulations. I would in this regard express gratitude to Nana Addo for making available 6.5million to address road safety situations in the country,” he established.



Reports stated that between January and December last year, a total of 13,645 road crashes resulting in 2, 3041 deaths and 13,677 injuries was recorded last year.
