Government should transform MTTU to a professional unit- Communique

Accra, Nov. 16, GNA - Participants at a just ended international conference on Road Safety has called on government to allocate more funding to road safety activities. A communique issued at the end of the conference stated that there should be an immediate passing of supporting regulations for the revised road traffic act 2004.

The conference was held as part of activities to mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the National Road Safety Commission and the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority. The conference on the theme: "Road Safety- A Shared Responsibility," brought together more 300 participants within the West African Sub-region with officials drawn from Road Safety Agencies, Transport Operators, Police, Customs Excise and preventive Service and various Transport Unions.

The communique stated that road traffic crashes constituted a major growing global socio-economic and health problem. It asked government to take immediate steps to transform the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service "into a dedicated and professional unit solely for traffic and safety duties". The participants also called for the "establishment of a special unit within the police service to be dedicated to road traffic issues".
