The Baba Yara Sports Stadium has been declared by the government as the next venue to host the 63rd National Independence celebration in Kumasi.

According to the Acting Regional Director of the National Sports Authority, the stadium has been closed down since Monday for renovation and preparation toward the upcoming celebration.

In a public notice dated February 17, 2020, Edmond Appiah said that the decision is “to enable the Youth and Sports Ministry and the National Sports Authority have ample uninterrupted time to fi critical places of the stadium before the celebration of Ghana’s 63rd independence Anniversary Celebration”.

“The total renovation will however resume immediately after the celebrations.”

Mr Appiah duly advised users of the stadium to make alternative arrangements for a continuity of their programmes.

“You will after the celebrations be duly informed when the stadium can host both football and athletics activities again,” he indicated.

As observed every year, 6th March is celebrated in remembrance of Ghana’s liberation from British rule.

Formerly, the Independence Square, in Accra, served as a permanent place for the celebration.

But President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo declared Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale as the host for last year’s celebration.
