Government to give financial clearance to institutions to recruit - Kwesi Yankah

A Minister State in charge of Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah has disclosed that government will soon give financial clearance to a number of institutions to either recruit or replace more staff to fill up the vacancies in those institutions.

This according to him, is in response to calls by some of the institutions that they are understaffed in the wake of government’s ban on recruitment into the education sector especially tertiary institutions.

At the 11th congregation ceremony Tamale Technical University (TaTU) on Saturday, the Minister admonished the graduates to be good Ambassadors of the Tamale Technical University and to explore the opportunities in the job market with their Technical Education background which is more practical and not to join the “monstrous” unemployed graduates association.

Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Abdulai Salifu Asuro said the University is stable and vibrant while discharging its mandate in line with its objectives and functions as the University and has put in place over ten(10) policy documents to aid the conduct of activities of the University.

He said the University and management with support from government and other stakeholders have made enormous progress towards the passage of the conversion of Tamale Technical University by an act of Parliament by end of the year and pleaded with Parliament to speed up with the processes.

“Students and Staff are all eager to hear parliamentary approval for the conversion so as to open up more positive and innovative administrative approach to achieving a high level of Technical education as the school is mapping up to rollout new HND and BTech programmes in Civil Engineering, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, Purchasing and Supply, Construction Technology and many others ” the VC said.

Prof Asuro further stated there is a huge shortfall in infrastructure in the school in respect of what the institution has and what is actually required to achieve the strategic visions of the University.

He enumerated some of the projects undertaken since 2014 and were completed under the staggering internally generated funds.

The newly commissioned 53-bed capacity University Hospital which will serve the Health needs of the school and the community, office for Lecturers, Mechanic Shop, Reservoir for Students, a campus Radio Station (Ridge FM) among others.

The Vice Chancellor made a special appeal to government to consider decoupling of Intermediate Technical and Vocational division from the University.

” One most distressing issue and source of worry amongst staff of the University has been the issue of the two-tier system run by the University where a combination of the tertiary and non tertiary system has often denied the University access to funds and other resources that go to the Technical Institutions”, he added.

The congregation ceremony was held for the 2015/2016 batch of students during which a total of 1,694 High National Diploma (HND) and the Bachelor of Technology (BTech) students who have successfully completed various programmes were graduated.
