Government to improve the lot of Veterans

Winneba (C/R), Feb. 5, GNA – President John Evans Atta Mills is committed to improving the lot of the members of Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) through various initiatives put in place for them, Mr. Mike Hammah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources has said.

Speaking at the first ever get-together Winneba District Veterans Association organised in Winneba on Saturday, Mr Hammah said initiatives line-up includes restructuring of VAG by changing the name to Veterans Administration of Ghana and providing an accommodation.

Mr. Mike Hammah, a Member of Parliament for Effutu, said the bill for changing of the name is before Parliament and when approved it would go a long way to support the veterans in manner ways.

The Minister said work on a building for the veterans at Burma Camp would soon commence.

He urged the Ghana Armed Forces personnel to come together to use their limited resources to provide jobs for both retired soldiers and Ghanaian public as a whole.

Nii Ephraim, Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, advised the veterans to use their rich talents to help support development in the Municipality, especially in the area of security.

He said the Assembly doors were wide open to receive suggestions, ideas and advice that would add value to their work to ensure sanity in the Municipality.

Warrant Officer 1 Jansah Swatson, former drum major of the Ghana Armed Forces, the local branch Chairman, urged all veterans in Effutu Municipality not yet registered with the Association to do so to enable them also to benefit.

He said very soon new registration of veterans would take off nationwide.
