Government to review upward allowances of chiefs - Vice President

Elmina, Aug. 12, GNA - Government would soon extend the payment of monthly allowances to Queenmothers and lower chiefs, Vice President John Dramani Mahama has announced.

"We are also considering reviewing the allowances upwards for all chiefs throughout the country as soon as it is implemented."

Vice President announced this on Thursday when he paid a courtesy call on Nana Kojo Kodua, Paramount Chief Edna in the Komenda Edna Eguafo Abirem District of the Centra Region as part of a day's working visit to the Region.

He had earlier on launched the National Youth Policy that would among other things give the youth the mandate to participate in decision making and work out issues against their progress.

The Vice President said the allowances was not only meager, but was also limited as only paramount chiefs were currently enjoying the facility, "but I know that Queenmothers and other chiefs are also working hard and deserve to benefit from it."

Vice President Mahama said the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs would soon come out with an elaborate programme concerning the issue and urged them to work hard to entrench traditional values in the system.

Nana Kodua appealed to the Vice President to consider rehabilitating a bridge close to the Elmina Castle as it was getting weaker on daily basis due to the high influx of tourists in the area.

He also commended government for choosing to launch the National Youth Policy in his traditional area, adding 93we in this area are highly honoured to be recognized for this programme."
