Government urged to re-organise "Kayayie"

Wa, Aug 12, GNA - A resident of Wa has appealed to the government to consider reorganizing the "Kayayie" porters business properly and make it a profitable venture for national development. Mr. Trenchard D. Youri said migration of labour was not an issue in Ghana alone but a problem in the world and therefore appealed to the government to stop regarding of porters as social menace and a nuisance.

He told the GNA in an interview that porters were performing functions that befitted many people and it was up to the government to organise them properly. Mr Youri said the government should stop its appeal to porters to go back to where they came from but take lessons from what went wrong and try to address the challenges. He suggested that recruitment agencies should get involved and make sure that the porters were profitably engaged.

Mr Youri suggested that porters should be provided with hostel facilities and banks should collect their daily earning from them for saving and medical services should be made available to them. He blamed the woes of the north on politicians from the north who, in one way or the other, conspired with governments to abrogate prudent government policies and interventions that were initiated to push development in the north forward.

Mr Youri said one thing that had caused the migration of northern youth to the south had been under-development and high school fees which many parents were unable to pay. He said so far as underdevelopment was the lot of the people in the north, migration among the youth would continue.
