Govt Goes After Selormey

May 10, Daily Giude -- Credible Information reaching Daily Guide indicates that the Attorney-General痴 Department has begun making moves to file the necessary applications in court for an order to be made for judicial sale of some of the plush houses in Accra belonging to the former deputy finance minister in the NDC administration, Mr. Victor Selormey.

A credible source at the Attorney-General痴 department who disclosed this to Daily Guide, stated that the move is part of measures taken by government to recover the $1million owed to the state by the late former deputy minister, for defrauding the state, by false pretences. Victor Selormey conspired with Dr. Fred Owusu-Boadu, a Ghanaian consultant in the United States, to fraudulently cause the loss of $1,297,500 to the state.

He was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, in hard labour, and ordered to pay a fine of ｢20million on two counts of conspiracy or in default serve extra 12 months imprisonment. The source, however, told Daily Guide that Selormey also failed to pay the ｢20million fine imposed on him, by court. According to the source, some of the Selormey痴 buildings expected to be confiscated by the state are located in Ashongman, a suburb of Accra.

Selormey died on Monday, April 18, 2005 at the age of 59. He was granted presidential remission to commemorate the 48th Anniversary of Ghana痴 Independence, but eventually died at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Cardiothoracic Centre, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, in Accra. Mr. Selormey, a cardio-patient with a pace-maker in his heart, died on his hospital bed, whilst efforts were being made to fly him abroad for medical treatment.
