The Young Democrats, a Pro-National Democratic Congress (NDC) group says the Mahama-led administration is becoming insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians. According to the group, as a social democratic party the wellbeing of the people should be its topmost priority – a situation it says government has failed woefully.

The Young Democrats was reacting to the recent increment in electricity and water tariffs by 78.9 percent and 52 percent respectively.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) says the tariff increment were necessary to help build the needed infrastructure of the utility companies to provide quality service.

But speaking to Citi News, Communications Director of the Young Democrats, Tafhim Gbonta maintained that the tariff increment is ill-timed.

He said the utility service providers have over the years performed abysmally and thus asking consumers to pay more for poor service is inappropriate.

Tafhim Gbonta blamed government for allowing PURC to overburden the ordinary Ghanaians who can barely make ends meet.

Mr. Gbonta called on government to as a matter of urgency intervene to ensure the tariff increment is reversed.

“We expect government which has signed a social contract with the people of Ghana to listen to our cry and call PURC to order. We expect government to be sensitive to the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian,” he stressed.
