Agona Swedru, Sept 19, GNA- Mr. Issah Ketekewu, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development has reiterated that government is committed to deepening the decentralisation policy to ensure good governance and rapid socio-economic development
He said since the assumption of power, the government has taken a number of significant initiatives to address some of the problems militating against the smooth implementation of the decentralisation policy.
Mr. Ketekewu announced this at a day's sensitisation workshop for Chief Directors and Regional Co-ordinating Directors at Agona Swedru. The workshop was under the theme: deepening the implementation of decentralisation policy -challenges and prospects.
He said with the inauguration of the 28 newly created District Assemblies by the government, chief directors and regional co-ordinating directors were expected to help them succeed.
Mr. Ketekewu said: "You will agree with me that this requires sustained capacity building initiatives and an appropriate endowment with financial resources."
He announced that the President has assented the Local Government Act 656, thus paving the way for the establishment of a Local Government Service and the integration of the sector departments into the District Assembly system.
Mr. Ketekewu said this would improve service delivery at the local level and also help the opening a new charter for implementation of decentralisation process.
He pointed out that the policy would touch on human rights, rights to self -realisation and right to development that would enhances economic and social status and right to safety.
Dr Glover-Quartey, Head of the Civil Service called on the Local Government and Rural Development to collaborate with the civil service to ensure the successful implementation of the new decentralisation policy.
He urged the staff of the civil service who would be posted to newly created District Assemblies to be steadfast because all their incentives and other benefits would be taken into consideration, to enhance production.
